A much better solution would be to limit the liveliness of either the ball or bats - or both.

Pitchers can protect themselves if given a chance...

I'm a pitcher mom, and I also was once at a hurricane's friendly I saw a 14U got hit on the forehead. The sound that makes was terrible I still remember. We also were and a tournament last weekend and my daughter almost was hit by a line drive. I will like to start a campaign to be mandatory, to wear a mask.

Yes a mask for High School baseball players is worth it. My son a HS pitcher was hit with a line drive in the face. Multiple broken bones, ten days in a trauma center, 150,000 in medical bills. This year he will be wearing a mask made by Rip Hamilton's Doctor.

I am one other mother that had to see this happen to my 11yr old daughter. You are definitely right, this is not something anyone should have to see! We were at a travel tournament with her team The Hurricanes and she was pitching. When the batter hit the ball we just new she had struck out until we seen our daughter hit the ground. She also got her glove up but just not in time. The ball had come off the bat so fast it was unreal! She crushed her nose and broke her mandible but was lucky enough she did not break her orbital bone or jaw. Casey went to surgery about 3 weeks later for nose reconstruction. She is definitely a trooper because about 3 days after her injury she was in the yard pitching. Casey still pitches to this day but she always has her faceguard on. Mothers, if you have a pitcher PLEASE do not let her on the mound without a faceguard!!!!

Thank you for speaking out on this topic. I have 10 and 12 year old daughters who play travel ball, a pitcher and short stop. Aside from warm-ups they never step on the field without their face masks. Unfortunately too many coaches are unsupportive and even outright against the use of these protective masks, so without it being mandatory it's fairly unpopular with the girls. Although I think the thought of broken bones in the face would be the most unpopular of all.
Keep up the crusade and I wish you well in your recovery.
